I’ll be honest – I do not understand why so many people skip the primary election.
It is one of the most important opportunities we have to shape the direction of our communities, yet many people choose to sit it out. And that is a big mistake.
The primary is the first and most critical step in the election process. It decides who advances to the general election. If you don’t participate, you’re surrendering your voice and allowing strong candidates to be pushed out, and the Democrats wants nothing more than that.
Whether people like to admit it or not, this is a game being played. And if we are not engaged, they will win because they are engaged.
As a Precinct Committee Officer, I’ve talked with many people in our community, and I hear the same thing far too often: “My vote doesn’t matter.” When people feel like their vote doesn’t matter, they disengage.
Not only is that statement not true – it is exactly what the Democrats wants you to believe so you will become disengaged.
The Democrats are much more consistent about showing up to vote. That level of participation has an impact. When one group shows up and another doesn’t, it affects outcomes – plain and simple.
If we want our communities to reflect the values and priorities of the people who live here, we have to participate early in the process.
Through our Legislative Committee and as PCOs, our goal is to bring that missing piece back. We want people to understand the candidates, stay informed, and most importantly – show up and vote in the primaries.
We the people are the most important piece in our system of government – and for too long, that piece has been missing. When citizens step back, the system no longer reflects the full voice of the people. Our goal, through our Legislative Committee and as PCOs, is to bring that piece back. We are taking it back by informing, serving, and encouraging participation – reminding people that their voice matters, especially in the primaries.
Because this system only works when people participate.
